Let’s just say I’ve learned a lot from my failures. Of course, this video isn’t my reality. The truth is that expeditions have always been inside me and it’s just taken a lot of time, effort and perseverance to find my path. What is true is that I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way - both personally and professionally. As much as I wish I could take some of them back, I’m grateful for the lessons learned and try to move forward as positively as I can. I don’t always get there but I believe

Cold? I like to stay positive and say, “not hot!” Once we’re moving 20 below is actually quite comfortable. In polar travel, our bodies generate quite a bit of heat, so getting too warm is often the problem. Overall at these temperatures, our margins for safety are quite small so we have to be on top of every system and procedure. On long breaks, I’ll wear my big down jacket and ski with it on for 5-10 minutes afterwards. However, it doesn’t take long for me to reach the “perfect temperature” an

It happens. Every time! And every time, it feels completely overwhelming. But that’s the nature of trying to hard things that haven’t been done before. There is so much uncertainty that mental aspects of being in an unknown situation are even greater than the physical. | Polar Explorer Eric Larsen

It’s easy to get overwhelmed at the thought of any big endeavor. Thinking about the end of an expedition on day 1 is stressful. Even thinking about the end of the day at the beginning can feel like an unbearable burden. Every journey, no matter how massive, starts the same way: one step forward. Then another. And another. “Begin with one step” is a mantra that has helped me in expeditions and life | Polar Explorer Eric Larsen

Four years ago at this time, I was recovering from my resection surgery while dealing with a terrible infection in my colon and even more surgeries… I was in much pain, I could barely walk or sleep and was taking lots of oxycodone to deal.. For five months, I couldn’t even sit in a chair!?! To be alive feels like a gift (and one I don’t take lightly). To be going back to Antarctica after so many years and guiding a short expedition to the South Pole feels incredible. | Polar Explorer Eric Larsen

Happy Valentine’s Day to all you snow, ice and cold lovers out there. Who says being cold hearted is a bad thing? This one goes out to my forever Valentine @smakmaria who has been with me on the best (and some pretty tough one’s as well) of life’s adventures. I may have missed our family Christmas and now Valentine’s (not a big celebration in our home) BUT, I was there for your birthday (the first time in a few years :) Side note: Maria is also a graduate of the “tough love expedition support” s

Day 17 of 51? I definitely don’t know the day or time. Traversing huge spaces while managing vast amounts of time is overwhelming on a good day and soul crushing on a bad day. To cope, we take the big problem and break it down into pieces. I don’t have to get through the entire expedition on Day 1 or even week 1. All I need to worry about is the next hour. And after that, the next hour. Half way through the day, it’s hot soup. I use a lot of mantras and saying to help me stay motivated and movin

And that’s wrap! I flew back to Punta Arenas yesterday after a month on the ice. Like many this I do, it’s both awesome and hard. I am excited to be heading back hime to Maria and the kids, but I feel a bit of sadness as well. When I first came to Antarctica in 2008 to guide a 43 day South Pole expedition, I felt out of place in the world - working toward these arbitrary polar expedition goals. I was living in my friend’s basement and struggling to make ends meet. Even though I had done harder a

Every time feels like the last time. And then at some point, I go back. I feel lucky to have experienced Antarctica in so many ways over the past 17 years. In 2021 when I was diagnosed with cancer, Antarctica was the last thing on my mind. Being back on the ice was a homecoming of sorts. I don’t know what the future holds, but for now I’m just grateful for the time to experience such a pristine wilderness over nearly two decades. | Polar Explorer Eric Larsen

DEVELOPING: Crews were responding this morning to a boat underwater in Lake Michigan. The U.S. Coast Guard said it was not involved in the recovery, but believes it could be in connection to a sunken vessel incident that occurred July 5. In that incident, four people aboard the boat were rescued by a nearby Good Samaritan, the U.S. Coast Guard said, who brought them aboard their vessel, and then safely back to shore. #lakemichigan #chicago #coastguard #boat @lisa.chavarria5
