On June 12, cyclist and pilot Bryan Allen pedaled the Gossamer Albatross across the English Channel. The dream of human-powered flight was very publicly realized on that day! The Museum of Flight is home to the Gossamer Albatross II, the backup aircraft for the big day. It’s albatross breeding season on Midway Atoll, a cluster of remote islands in the Pacific Ocean—and that means scores and scores and scores of chicks who barely bat an eye at a cycling human. Rangers from the New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) bring out their scale and basket to weigh the Northern Royal Albatross chicks nesting at Pukekura/Taiaroa Head on March 26. Thanks to DNA testing, we now know that both chicks on cam this season are males!
